  Welcome from the Director

Dear Friends of Stillpoint,

As we enter our fifth year, we pause to reflect on the gift that Stillpoint has been to our city and State. While the Center has its roots in the vision and daring dream of three women, it has been embraced by far more. It has grown as a result of many prayers, financial contributions, commitment from the Board of Trustees, hours of volunteer help and enthusiastic support from people like you.

For centuries individuals removed themselves from the world to find God, and to develop a spiritual life. Today there is a hunger among people globally, to experience God in the world, in daily life, and to engage in a meaningful personal spiritual life. Stillpoint provides a rich resource for people on this quest. I am continually amazed at the responses when people hear about Stillpoint. Frequently there is an excitement in the discovery of a spiritual oasis in the desert, where one can experience the hospitality and spiritual nourishment that is the mission of Stillpoint. Sometimes it is a silent tear the relief that comes from finding that one is not alone on the journey. Recently one woman's experience was expressed in these words: I am back from the Directees' Sabbath, filled with gratitude and love. . . I realized more profoundly than ever what Stillpoint and the people have meant to me. . . words fail me in expressing my gratitude, love, and indebtedness to you and all there. . . I have discovered my roots here, claimed my spiritual nature here, and discovered my calling here.

This Fall, we at Stillpoint are very mindful of the lesson that Nature teaches us about endings and beginnings. Abbot Mark Serna ends his time with us and begins a new chapter of his soul spirit life as he returns to his monastery. He has graced us in many ways over the past 15 months, so we send him forth with our gratitude and blessings. As we say “Good Bye” to Mark, we say “Welcome” to Dr. Steven Lodesky who is beginning life at Stillpoint, as Associate Director. Dr. Steve is a trained Spiritual Director, he holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Louvain University in Belgium, and has been the Executive Director of the John Main Meditation Center in Tucson, AZ, so he brings many gifts together with a deep spiritual life. Although I will miss Mark as a colleague and friend, I look forward to working with Steve as together we continue to grow the mission, faithful to the vision of Stillpoint, as a Center for Spiritual Development in Southern Nevada.

Please enjoy our Fall Calendar, and I pray that you will find much to delight your soul-self among the Offerings. In particular I hope that you will include Thomas Keating's visit in your schedule,. Sitting at his feet, listening to his wise holy teachings is one of the most memorable events of my life. We look forward to welcoming you and your friends for this and many Stillpoint events.
